Your attention please to a lengthy note... |
| As far as I am concerned, a syllabus is a contract between me and the students who enroll in my classes in terns of the requirements or expectations placed by me upon students for satisfactory performance. My reason for posting this note is this: In my life as either a student or a professor, I have been connected with ...(hold on a second)... seven universities, ranging in caliber from second-rate to world class research institutions, BUT, in recent times, I have been shocked, baffled, and dismayed by the tendency of some GRADUATE students to receive a syllabus from the instructor first day of class (if they show up), sit through his/her review of it, and then disregard it as nothing more than an irrelevant handout. As a result, at the close of the semester, these students either miss an assignment entirely or produce a product at the last minute that has absolutely nothing to do with instructions detailed in the syllabus AND discussed in class. I've been around too long to have any patience (or leniency) with that kind of irresponsibility. Read and study the @#&^!*% syllabus like you would a contract for the mortgage on your new house (and take seriously what I as your academic real estate advisor have to say in writing or in person about what you need to do)...if you can't or won't do that, then you need to evaluate whether you would like to work under the leadership of someone like you. In the same vein, if you are a person of this description, you have just been put on notice that you don't belong in a position of authority over decisions that affect people's lives, most especially children, families, and practitioners of any discipline (like teachers or nurses or physical therapists). I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but the consequences of the type of negligence I am describing are rather unsavory. |
Having said all that,
Not all syllabi are posted at the current
time because (A) Internet-based instructional resources
are very time consuming to develop; (B) I have to
deal with
what is most urgent and do-able under the circumstances,
meaning the current semester;(C) some
professors have primary responsibility for certain courses that I also teach,
and
I gladly defer to them by referring you to their
syllabi
