Clubs and OrganizationsAssociation for Childhood Education International (ACEI) is an organization for anyone interested in children from infancy through early adolescence. The organization places emphasis upon young children and is a student branch of the larger organization. The student branch on the ASU campus was chartered on October 30, 1974. Arkansas State University Student International Reading Association Any student in elementary, early childhood, or secondary education is eligible to join. The organization meets on a monthly basis to discuss activities associated with education. They sponsor the Scholastic Book Fair. The profits from the book fair will support Student IRA approved activities, such as working with students in the schools and providing financial support for attending conferences. Dr. Deborah Owens and Mrs. Meryl Worley are co-sponsors. They can be contacted through the Elementary Education Department, 870-972-3059. The ASU Middle Level Association (ASU MLA) is a collegiate affiliate of the National Middle School Association, and has existed since 2006 in the Teacher Education Department in the College of Education. Members have all the benefits of NMSA membership, including exclusive access to journals and the latest in research in the middle school arena. The association’s goals are: 1) To promote middle level teacher education at Arkansas State University; 2) To offer fellowship and support among students interested in the education of young adolescents; 3) To encourage students to become involved in professional organizations at the campus, state and national level; 4) To provide access to resources that advance work with young adolescents, such as guest speakers, local teachers, higher education faculty, and the National Middle School Association; and 5) To advance the quality of the middle level teacher education program at Arkansas State University. Faculty sponsor is Dr. Dixie Keyes and this year’s co-presidents are Carla Sockey and Dorothy Frederick. ASU Rehabilitation Counselors Association (ASURCA) ASURCA is the official student organization within the Department of Psychology and Counseling's MRC Program. This organization is recognized by ASU's student government organization as well as a national affiliate of other rehabilitation counseling student organizations. The primary function of ASURCA is to encourage the pursuit of academic and professional excellence within the university by promoting the interaction among rehabilitation counseling graduate students and with faculty. ASURCA also schedules both educational (e.g., guest speakers, conference attendance) and social activities (e.g., semester parties) that promote disability awareness within the university community. The types of disabilities include substance abuse, psychiatric disorders, physical disabilities, developmental disabilities, HIV/AIDS, etc. ASURCA also provides a social and academic network of support throughout the student's program of studies. For more information please contact Dr. Loretta McGregor at 870-972-3064. Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) Kappa Delta Pi is an international honor society in education. Persons who exhibit the ideals of scholarship, high personal standards, and promise in teaching and allied professions may be elected to membership. The scholarship requirement is a minimum of 50 hours with a G.P.A. of 3.00 or above. Kappa Delta Pi encourages improvement, distinction in achievement, and contributions to education. PE Majors Club (PEM) The purpose of the Physical Education Major Club (PEM) is to increase professional understanding and involvement of students through stimulating participation in physical education activities and concerns outside the confines of the classroom. More specifically, the objective of the PEM Club are to improve local, state, district, and national student programs, to provide avenues for student leadership experiences, to develop an awareness of HPERD as a profession and as a potential career, to initiate, sponsor and/or collaborate in conferences, workshops, and projects involving HPERD, and to advocate maximum representation on and involvement of student leadership in the Alliance. for more information contact one of the club sponsors, Andy Mooneyhan or Agneta Sibrava at 870-972-3066. Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) Phi Epsilon Kappa Fraternity (PEK) It is an educational and charitable (non-profit) organization dedicated to the advancement of the fields of Health Education, Physical Education, Recreation Education, and Safety Education. Psi Chi To be eligible to join a student must have completed 3 semesters of college courses, completed 9 semester hours of psychology, register for major or minor standing in psychology or for a program psychological in nature, have 3.0 overall GPA and 3.0 GPA in psychology, have high standards of personal behavior, and be accepted by a two-thirds vote at a regular meeting of the chapter. Student-Arkansas Education Association (SAEA) The Student-Arkansas Education Association Program is a tri-level organization-national, state, and local. National Educational Association (NEA), with more than 15,000 locals and more than 2.2 million members across the country provides you with a first class professional network encompassing every aspect of the educational community. Membership in the Student-Arkansas Educational Association Program provides you with: a pre-professional association for students entering the teaching field, $1,000,000 association professional liability insurance while in the classroom, workshops addressing issues of professional development, opportunities to network with other professionals, and much more.
